Collection: Toru Kaizawa

//

Toru Kaizawa grew up surrounded by his late father, craftsman Tsutomu Kaizawa, and his fellow artisans, and alongside his younger brother, the late woodcarver Koji Kaizawa. His great-grandfather was Utorentoku Kaizawa, one of the master craftsmen of the Meiji era. He began learning woodcarving early on and started selling his works at his father's folk art shop around the time he graduated from high school. At that time, he mainly worked on three-dimensional animal carvings, and in his 30s, he began making Ita (wooden trays). While making traditional folk tools such as Makiri (small knives), he also creates original woodcarvings that utilise his craftsmanship.
