Collection: Helen Hamlin

Rwyf wastad wedi bod yn chwilfrydig am ryngweithio tywydd a hinsawdd gyda’r  amgylchedd naturiol ac adeiledig. Rwy'n caru natur wyllt gogledd Cymru sydd wedi ei effeithio gan y tywydd, ond yn arbennig o ysbrydoledig gyda Blaenau Ffestiniog.
Rwyf wedi cael fy nenu'n arbennig at y ffordd mae golau yn chwarae ar strwythurau naturiol a rhai a wnaed gan ddyn. Mae rhywbeth hynod ddiddorol i mi am y gweadau a'r teimlad pur o fannau gwyllt a strwythurau gwag. Efallai mai dychweliad tawel natur ar ôl y gweithgaredd diwydiannol prysur ydyw. Efallai mai gweadau gweledol anhygoel y dirwedd galed y mae diwydiannau wedi'i gadael ar ôl ydyw, yn ogystal â'r dirwedd garw ei hun.
Beth bynnag ydyw, rwy'n ymdrechu i ddod â rhywfaint o'r golau a'r teimlad anhygoel hwnnw i'm gwaith celf. Rwy'n caru'r ffordd y mae paent yn chwarae dros wead yn yr un ffordd â golau ac yn defnyddio gwahanol dechnegau i osod gwead corfforol ar fy nghynfas cyn symud i'r cam peintio. Mae gweithio yn y ffordd hon yn rhoi naws annisgwyl i'r gwaith sy’n rhoi mwynhad mawr i mi.
Mae pob llun yn antur, ac rwy'n ceisio cyfleu teimladau wedi'u hysbrydoli gan olygfa yn hytrach na chynhyrchu delwedd adnabyddadwy ar unwaith. Weithiau, wrth gwrs, nid yw pethau'n gweithio allan, ond pan fyddant yn gwneud hynny, rwy'n gweld y canlyniadau'n gyffrous ac yn ysgogi meddwl. Gobeithio y byddwch chithau hefyd.

I have always been fascinated by the interaction of weather and climate with the natural and built environment. I love the wild, weather-beaten nature of north Wales, but particularly draw inspiration from Blaenau Ffestiniog.
I have been particularly drawn to the play of light on both natural and man-made structures. There is something fascinating to me about the textures and sheer feeling of wild spaces and abandoned structures. Perhaps it is the quiet return of nature after the frantic industrial activity. Perhaps it is the amazing visual textures of the hard-bitten landscape that industries have left behind, as well as the rugged landscape itself.
Whatever it is, I strive to bring some of that amazing light and feeling to my artwork. I love the way that paint plays over a texture in the same way as light and employ various techniques to lay down physical texture on my canvas before moving to the painting stage. Working in this way gives unpredictability to the work which I really enjoy.
Every picture is an adventure, and I try to convey feelings inspired by a scene rather than producing an immediately recognisable image. Sometimes, of course, things do not work out, but when they do, I find the results exciting and thought provoking. I hope you do too.
