Collection: Mari-Ruth Oda

Mae Mari-Ruth Oda yn gerflunydd o Japan sy’n byw ac yn gweithio ar Benrhyn Llŷn yng Ngogledd Cymru. Fe’i ganed yn Papua Gini Newydd, a chafodd ei magu’n symud rhwng cyfandiroedd—profiad a feithrinodd sensitifrwydd cynnar i’r hyn sy’n gorwedd y tu hwnt i ddiwylliannau, ac at ddiddordeb yn agweddau sylfaenol, cyffredin profiad dynol.

Astudiodd Ddylunio Tri Dimensiwn (Pren, Metel, Cerameg a Gwydr) ym Mhrifysgol Metropolitan Manceinion, ac yna cwblhaodd MA mewn Celf a Dylunio ym Mhrifysgol Wolverhampton. Ar ôl bron i dri degawd yn gweithio o’i stiwdio ym Manceinion, symudodd Oda i ogledd Cymru wledig. Yma, mae’r agosatrwydd at y dirwedd o’i chwmpas a rhythmau cylchol y byd naturiol wedi dod yn ffynhonnell barhaus o ysbrydoliaeth.

Gan weithio ar draws ystod o ddeunyddiau a graddfeydd, mae Oda wedi ymgymryd â chomisiynau’n rhyngwladol ac wedi arddangos yn eang, gan gynnwys yn yr Royal Academy of Arts, London; Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Japan; Musée de Carouge, Switzerland; a’r Victoria and Albert Museum, London, yn ogystal â Francis Gallery, Los Angeles.

Mari-Ruth Oda is a Japanese sculptor living and working on the Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales. Born in Papua New Guinea, she grew up moving between continents, an experience that fostered an early sensitivity to what lies beyond cultures to an interest in the fundamental, shared aspects of human experience.

She studied Three-Dimensional Design (Wood, Metal, Ceramics, and Glass) at Manchester Metropolitan University, followed by an MA in Art and Design at the University of Wolverhampton. After nearly three decades working from her studio in Manchester, Oda relocated to rural North Wales. Here, the intimacy with the surrounding landscape and the cyclical rhythms of the natural world has become a continuing source of inspiration.

Working across a range of materials and scales, Oda has undertaken commissions internationally and has exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy of Arts, London; Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Japan;  Musée de Carouge, Switzerland; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and Francis Gallery, Los Angeles.
