Mae delweddaeth Flora yn deillio o’i synnwyr o elfennau chwedlonol ac archdeipaidd y dirwedd, fel y’u ceir yn y traddodiad adrodd straeon. Mae hi wedi’i swyno gan sut mae gweddillion ein plentyndod a darllen gydol oes yn effeithio ar ein cysylltiad emosiynol â thirwedd. Mae hi wedi bod yn byw ym Mrynberian, Gorllewin Cymru, ers un mlynedd ar ddeg, ac mae ei gwaith yn myfyrio fwyfwy ar fythau lleol, real a dychmygol, fel straeon o berthyn, llywio ei ffordd tuag at deimlad o gartref, dysgu iaith wahanol.
Mae motiff y cwest trawsnewidiol yn llywio ei gwaith gydag ymdeimlad o deithio allan i'r goedwig wyllt, ac i mewn i ddirgelion yr hunan. Mae hi’n gwneud darluniau o lefydd anghyfarwydd yng Nghymru, yn gwrando ar chwedlau, chwedlau awgrymog hanner-clywedig, yn dychmygu’r chwedloniaeth leol, yn gweithio mewn cyfresi i adeiladu gweledigaeth stori gyfoethog. Mae'r gyfres o lithograffau yn seiliedig ar arhosiad yng Nghorris yng Ngogledd Cymru. Mae hi wedi ymroi i arloesi o fewn argraffu, gan arbrofi gyda thechnegau ysgythriad peintiol megis trosglwyddo monoteip, golchi tir gwyn, trosglwyddo colagraff, a'r dull codi siwgr a ddefnyddir gan Picasso, lle mae'n defnyddio ei saim trwyn i wneud patrymau gwrthsefyll.
“Rwy’n mwynhau gweithio gydag olion annisgwyl, eu harsylwi ac ymateb iddynt, i freuddwydio fy nelweddau i fodolaeth. Trwy byrth alcemegol ysgythriad neu lithograffeg, gallaf fynd i mewn i wahanol fydoedd hudolus a gwneud fy ngwaith yn yr awyrgylchoedd stori tylwyth teg hynny.”
“Wrth ysgythru, mae’r plât copr yn mynd i mewn i’r mordant fel i grochan gwrach; Gan weithio fel hyn, rydych yn darlunio incantations ac yn bwrw swynion. Rwy'n mwynhau defnyddio tiroedd ysgythru parhaol ac anhrefnus i ollwng cyfle i mewn i'm gwaith, a byddaf wedyn yn sgrapio i mewn iddo gyda chrafwr ac ysgythru ychwanegol i gyrraedd y ddelwedd ac atgofio fy straeon cysgodol, breuddwydiol. Mae awgrym o ymestyn y tu hwnt, neu tuag at yr Arall, bob amser yn bresennol yn fy ngwaith.
Rwyf hefyd yn defnyddio defod a dewiniaeth syml i ysgogi cysylltiadau annisgwyl. Felly mae delweddau o fy mywyd bob dydd a’m cof yn cael eu casglu a’u rhwymo i fytholeg bersonol betrus a barddonol sy’n fy ngwau i’r byd ac i bobl eraill.”
Flora’s imagery springs out of her sense of the mythical and archetypal elements of landscape, as found in the storytelling tradition. She is fascinated by how the residue of our childhood and lifelong reading affects our emotional connection with a landscape. She has been living in Brynberian, West Wales, for eleven years, and her work increasingly meditates upon local myths, real and imagined, as stories of belonging, navigating her way towards a feeling of home, learning a different language.
The motif of the transformative quest informs her work with a sense of travelling outwards into the wild forest, and inwards into the mysteries of the self. She makes drawings of unfamiliar places in Wales, listening to tales, half-heard hinted legends, imagining the local mythology, working in series to build up a rich storied vision. A series of lithographs are based on a stay in Corris in North Wales. She is devoted to innovation within print, experimenting with techniques of painterly etching such as monotype transfer, white ground washes, collagraph transfer, and the sugar lift method used by Picasso, in which he uses his nose-grease to make resist patterns.
“I enjoy working with unexpected traces, observing and responding to them, to dream my images into being. Through the alchemical portals of etching or lithography, I can enter different magical worlds and make my work in those fairytale atmospheres.”
“In etching, the copper plate enters the mordant as into a witch’s cauldron; working like this, you are drawing incantations and casting spells. I enjoy using impermanent and chaotic etching grounds to let chance into my work, which I then scry into with scraper and additional etching to reach the image and evoke my shadowy, dreamlike stories. A suggestion of reaching beyond, or towards the Other, is always present in my work.
I also use simple ritual and divination to provoke unexpected connections. Images from my everyday life and my memory are thus gathered and bound into a tentative and poetic personal mythology that weaves me to the world and to other people.”
