Wrth ddewis pren ar gyfer Prosiect Coed Coexist, tynnwyd fy sylw at gangen a rwygwyd o’r goeden pan syrthiodd. Cefais fy swyno gan yr hyn a welais fel tystiolaeth graffig o’r trychineb. Tua thraean o’r ffordd ar hyd y gangen, mae’r clwyf hwn yn dyst i effaith y storm a thrais marwolaeth y goeden. Cafodd y gangen ei rhwygo, gan ddatgelu ei haenau garw a’r gwagcter tu fewn. Wedi’i gosod ar ei phen a’i llifio’n daclus, mae’r rhwyg yn ystumio i fyny ar ongl sy’n awgrymu lansiad, ymadawiad yn hytrach na diwedd. Rwyf wedi defnyddio cyfuchliniau garw’r pren rhwygiedig i wasgu marciau i glai porslen Parian, tra bod cromlin darn datgysylltiedig o risgl yn darparu mowld sy’n pennu siâp parabolaidd y porslen wedi’i danio. Mae’n sgwrs rhwng pren a chlai, rhwng digwyddiad a chofnod – y ffurfiau porslen yn dychwelyd at y pren i hedfan.

Selecting wood for the Coed Coexist Project, my eye was drawn to a branch ripped from the tree during its fall. I was fascinated by what I saw as graphic evidence of the catastrophe. About a third of the limb’s length, this wound attests to the impact of the storm and violence of the tree’s demise. The branch was torn, revealing its ragged layers, and hollowed interstices. Placed on its neatly sawn end, the tear gestures upwards at an angle suggestive of launch, a departure rather than an end point. I have used the rough contours of the ruptured wood to impress marks into Parian porcelain clay, while the curve of a detached piece of bark provides a mould dictating the parabolic shape of the fired porcelain. It is a conversation between wood and clay, between event and record - the porcelain forms returning to the wood to take flight.
