Collection: Luned Rhys Parri

Gyda gwaith mewn casgliadau yn Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru a CADW, mae Luned Rhys Parri yn prysur ennill cydnabyddiaeth fel un o artistiaid mwyaf enwog a gwreiddiol Cymru.

Yn gweithio o’i stiwdio yn y Groeslon, Gwynedd, mae ei gweithiau cyffrous mewn amlgyfrwng a phapur mewn cynghrair eu hunain.

Mae celf Luned yn llythrennol yn camu allan o’r ffrâm mewn ffrwydrad terfysglyd o lawenydd sy’n teimlo ‘ar y foment’ ac yn hiraethus ar yr un pryd. Mae bywiogrwydd, hiwmor ac atgof yn plethu i greu rhywbeth ffres a ffyrnig sydd heb os, yn Gymreig.

Yn gyn-ddisgybl i’r diweddar Peter Prendergast, mae gweithiau beiddgar Luned wastad wedi denu dotiau coch ym Mhlas Glyn y Weddw. Mae’n hawdd deall sut mae ei dathliadau o Gymru a’i phobl, cyffredin ac anghyffredin, yn cael eu cipio gan gasglwyr o Gymru a thu hwnt.

Mae yna gyfoeth a chynefindra i’w chymeriadau, rhai sy’n trigo yng Nghymru y gorffennol efallai: cyfle i ail-werthuso’r harddwch a’r hiwmor a anwybyddir yn y genhedlaeth hŷn, ein dodrefn, ein ffasiynau, ein hadeiladau dadfeiliedig. Rhoddir dealltwriaeth newydd i olygfeydd bob dydd anymddiheuriadol, gyda'r gallu i wneud i'r rhai sy'n dilyn ac yn caru ei gwaith wenu o glust i glust.

“Er nad oedd gennyf unrhyw thema benodol mewn golwg wrth baratoi ar gyfer yr arddangosfa, mae llawer o’r darnau’n portreadu unigolion sydd, am wahanol resymau, wedi gwneud argraff barhaol arnaf. Maent yn cynnwys Gerald a Malo (nai a nith Hedd Wyn); Luned Gonzales, sy'n personoli Patagonia Gymreig; a'r seramegydd, Meri Wells.

Mae'n debyg bod rhai o'r ffigurau eraill yn fy atgoffa o fy mam a phobl eraill o'i chenhedlaeth.

Rwy'n gobeithio y bydd fy ngwaith maes o law yn siarad â chynulleidfa ehangach na dim ond yr ychydig ffodus ohonom sy'n dal i allu byw a gweithio yn ein gwlad. A allai’r arddangosfa hon o bosibl atgoffa alltudion, yn ogystal â goroeswyr, o’n hanes cyffredin a’r brwydrau yn y gorffennol sydd wedi ein gwneud yr hyn ydym heddiw? Efallai y bydd rhai pobl yn dysgu ychydig am ein ffordd o fyw, fel y mae heddiw ac fel yr oedd yn y gorffennol diweddar.

Rwy’n gobeithio gwneud i bobl feddwl am ailgylchu. Nid yn unig ailgylchu ffabrigau, darnau o bapur newydd ac ati, ond hefyd ailgylchu hen syniadau, ffasiynau a thybiaethau a allai fod o ddiddordeb a dilysrwydd o hyd.

Yn fwy na dim, dwi’n gobeithio gwneud i wylwyr fy ngwaith wenu yn achlysurol.”

With work held in collections at the National Library of Wales and CADW, Luned Rhys Parri is fast gaining recognition as one of Wales’ most celebrated and original artists.

Working from her studio in Groeslon, Gwynedd, her exciting works in mixed media and paper are in a league of their own.

Luned’s art quite literally steps out of the frame in a riotous burst of joy that feels at once both ‘of the moment’ and proudly nostalgic. Motion, playfulness and memory entwine to make for something fresh and fierce and undoubtedly Welsh.

A former pupil of the late Peter Prendergast, Luned’s bold works have never failed to receive a red dot during any of her previous shows at Oriel Plas Glyn y Weddw, and it’s easy to see how her celebrations of Wales and its people, both ordinary and extraordinary, are snapped up by collectors from within our borders and beyond.

There’s a richness and familiarity to her characters that inhabit a Wales that is perhaps no more; a chance to double-take and re-evaluate the overlooked beauty and humour in our elders, our furniture, our fashions, our crumbling buildings. Unapologetic everyday scenes are given new understanding, with the ability to make those who follow and love her work beam from ear to ear.

Although I had no specific theme in mind when I chose the exhibits, many of the pieces portray individuals who, for different reasons, have made a lasting impression on me. They include Gerald and Malo (nephew and niece, respectively, of Hedd Wyn); Luned Gonzales, who personifies Welsh Patagonia; and the ceramicist, Meri Wells.

Some of the other figures depicted are probably reminiscent of my mother and other people of her generation.

I hope my work will eventually speak to a wider audience than just the fortunate few of us who are still able to live and work in our country. Could this exhibition possibly remind exiles, as well as survivors, of our common history and the past struggles which have made us what we are today? Some people might learn a little about our way of life, as it is today and as it was in the recent past.

I hope to make people think about recycling. Not only the recycling of fabrics, scraps of newsprint, etc, but also the recycling of old ideas, fashions and assumptions which might still have interest and validity.

Above all, I hope to make viewers of my work smile occasionally.
