Collection: Sioned Medi Evans

Mae Sioned Medi Evans yn ddarlunydd llawrydd llawn amser, yn gweithio ar brosiectau creadigol sydd yn amrywio o lyfrau llun a stori plant i weithdai celf a lles. Yn ddiweddar mae Sioned wedi dychwelyd yn ôl i’w gwreiddiau fel artist a dylunydd tecstiliau. Graddiodd o Goleg Celf Manceinion yn 2016 gyda Gradd Dosbarth cyntaf mewn Tecstiliau, gan arbenigo mewn gweu.

Mae'n ymddiddori mewn lliw, a’r berthynas rhwng lliwiau sydd yn ysgogi ei gwaith, ynghyd a’r cariad tuag at ymdrin â strwythurau a siapiau, sydd gyda’i gilydd yn creu cyfansoddiadau newydd a chyffrous. Wrth ddefnyddio gweu fel celfyddyd i ymchwilio posibiliadau di-ben-draw lliw a dylunio, tra hefyd yn arbrofi gyda’r toreth o wahanol ffurfiannau, mae Sioned yn llwyddo i lunio darnau cyfoes gyda naws gyfarwydd.

Gan ganolbwyntio ar ryngweithiadau ac ymyriadau lliw, mae casgliad Sioned o ddarnau wedi’u gwau yn cyflwyno agwedd gyfoes ar gelfyddyd draddodiadol. Mae hi'n gweld y gwaith fel man cychwyn ar gyfer archwilio lliw a ffurf, trin a symud siapiau, a’r broses ailadroddus fel cyflwr myfyriol. Mae'r artist yn gweld gweu fel dawns, mae yna rhythm a dirgryniad tawel iddo; mae symudiad y creu yn dynwared y dyluniad, yr ailadrodd yn y broses yn efelychu’r canlyniad.

Gwneir y dyluniadau gan ddefnyddio llinellau glân a manwl, ond rhoddir gorau i'r egwyddorion hyn wrth eu trawsnewid yn ddarnau wedi'u gwau. Caniateir i'r ffabrig greu ei siâp a'i ffurf ei hun, nid yw’r rheolaeth bellach yn nwylo’r dylunydd, gan roi ystyr a bywyd newydd i'r gwaith.

Mae'r paled liw cyfyngedig yn caniatáu i'r gynulleidfa weld sut mae lliwiau penodol yn cael eu gweld mewn gwahanol gyfansoddiadau, ac mae'r defnydd o edafedd mohair yn creu llinellau aneglur, tra bod y gwlân yn llwyddo i ffurfio llinellau diffiniedig. Cyflwynir rhaniadau cynnil i greu tensiwn penodol; fel gwthio a thynnu magnetig a chydbwysedd rhwng llinellau a gofod gwag.

Sioned Medi Evans is a full-time freelance illustrator, working on creative projects ranging from children’s picture books to conducting workshops based on art and wellbeing. Recently, Sioned has returned to her roots as a textile artist and designer. She graduated from Manchester School of Art in 2016 with a First Class Honours degree in textiles, specialising in knitwear.

Colour and the relationship between colours is what fascinates and propels her work, paired with the love of grid-like structures and 'shape manipulation', which together create new and exciting compositions. By using knit as an art form to investigate the endless possibilities of colour and design, whilst experimenting with the abundance of different formations, Sioned Medi Evans manages to construct contemporary pieces which hold a familiar feel.

Focusing on interactions and interruptions of colour, Sioned Medi Evans’ collection of knitted pieces presents a contemporary approach to a traditional art form. She sees the work as a starting point in the exploration of colour and form, the manipulation and movement of shapes, and the repetitiveness of the process as a meditative state.

The artist sees knitting like a dance, there’s a rhythm and a calming vibration to it; the movement in the creation mimics the design, the repetition of the process is simulated in the outcome. The designs are made using clean lines and precision, however these principles are relinquished when transforming them into knitted pieces; the fabric is permitted to create its own shape and form, the control is no longer in the designer’s hands, breathing new meaning and life into the work.

The limited colour palette allows the audience to witness how specific colours are perceived in different compositions, and the use of mohair yarn creates a subtle distortion, in contrast to the wool that manages to form defined lines. Subtle shifts and elusive divides are presented to evoke a certain tension; a magnetic push and pull, a balancing act of lines and negative space.
