Being half Finnish, she took the opportunity to train in Finland, studying for three years at Lahti Design Institute, before graduating from Birmingham in 1996 (BA Hons). She set up her studio in the dramatic landscape of Eryri, in the Nantlle valley in 1997. This rich backdrop of mountainous crags and rugged coastline has been her muse ever since.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eAll her pieces are made by hand and by hammer, using her contemporary interpretation of traditional skills. Developing and passing on these skills is a crucial aspect of her practice.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eMuch of her work is to commission from personal to public, small scale to large, including the Prince Philip Challenge Trophy for the Henley Royal Regatta and the Processional Cross and Acolyte Candlesticks for Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. Mae’r goeden yn gwella ei hun, gan ddod yn fwy prydferth yn y broses.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eWhen I saw the Beech tree wood piled up in the yard at John and Junko’s place, I immediately picked up a piece with a large bulbous burr which looked and felt like a natural hammer. I used several burr ‘hammers’ to create this copper bowl, and was delighted when the outline of the edge echoed the wiggly outline of a burr, which also echoes the silhouette of a mature Beech tree. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe bowl hovers above a burr ‘hammer’ sliced open, mirrored, with the remaining offcuts balancing the forms visually, so nothing is wasted. The whole piece is a celebration of the beauty of the crazy curvy grain of burrs; uncontrolled, erratic growth caused by stress to the tree (from infection or injury), creating a dense, irregular wood grain.
