This person was returning from going to the forest to select and cut a tree to replace the mast on his wooden boat. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eAn inspiration, a spark came from this to make or grow things that don’t come with a barcode but directly from what is in our surroundings. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eHe has been learning to play Gyil\/ xylophone ‘small small’, after hearing the instrument at a drum festival in the year 2000. After borrowing an instrument he made one, then several more. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\"\u003eIt’s hard to find a teacher in the UK though he initially had lessons with Ben Lawrence from Bristol and then Baba Kone from Burkina and has been to Ghana for a couple of relatively short visits, drawn by an interest in the Gyil. There he had lessons in Accra with SK Kakraba Lobi and travelled up north and was invited to part of some Lobi and Dagara funerals. Mae’r 14 allwedd i gyd wedi’u gwneud o’r goeden ffawydd a syrthiodd. Rwy’n cymryd yr ochr isaf, y canol, ac yn tynnu “bol” gyda chyllell. Mae hyn yn gwneud y nodyn yn is, yn ddyfnach. Mae torri darn tenau oddi ar waelod pennau’r allweddi yn codi’r nodyn ychydig. Tyfwyd y cyrbwydd (gourds) yn Llŷn y llynedd. Mae pob un yn cael ei diwnio i’r un nodyn â’r allwedd ffawydd drwy newid maint ei dwll. Nid yw bob amser yn hawdd (i mi) ei ganfod, ond pan fydd y cyrbw yn cyd-daro â’r allwedd, mae naid yn y sain. A storm has passed and all is still though the wind still races over Mynydd Tir y Cwmwd above. I have been playing so much Gyil (xylophone) I can still hear it in my head. Or is it?? Is the sound coming from the wood above the beach? I follow it…\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe xylophone I am making is inspired by the simple design of the Gyil (Lobi name for the xylophone) made by the Lobi people of Upper West Ghana. The 14 keys are all made from the fallen beech tree. I take the underside, centre and remove a belly with the knife. It takes the note lower, deeper. A slither off the undersides of the ends lifts the note slightly. The gourds underneath were grown on Llyn last year. Each is tuned to the same note as the beech key by changing its hole size. It’s often not easy to find (for me) but when the gourd is tuned to the key there is a jump in sound. A sudden resonance that takes me by surprise. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eI don’t really know this tree. Yet here is its wood in my hands. In it the bones of a tune.
